Headbands are a type of hair accessory that is either used to hold hair back so it doesn’t get into the eyes and face, or as an accessory to enhance appearance.  There are two basic types, rounded and oval shaped flower headbands, which are made from various materials.

For infants, flower headbands are typically made from a rubber or cloth material with the flowers glued on.  Soft materials are normally used to avoid injuring the child.  Older children can use plastic materials however they have a tenancy to break (which is great for the manufacturer but not for the parents that need to replace them).  Adults flower headbands can be made of just about any material, including rubber, plastic, cloth, and metal.  Metal flower headbands last longer but pose a risk of injury for young children.

Rhinestone kits can be found at most craft stores, such as Michaels.  You can also find the kits online, from stores such as eBay and Amazon.  Why buy one of the kits?  Well, they’re fantastic!  Children especially love the kits because they can spend hours and hours putting together their own little creations(headbands, bracelets, etc.).  You usually get a nice variety of stones and beads to choose from and quite often they give you a little booklet that offers some ideas of things you can make.  You’ll also find the necessary strings and elastics to use with the beads, as well as clasps to attach them (unless of course you knot them together).  If you’ve specifically purchased a headband kit, they come complete with various types of plastic headbands you can glue the beads and stones on to.  Children can make beautiful jewelery for themselves and/or their friends as well.  This is sure to be a “smile maker” when put into stockings or wrapped under the tree.

Another idea is to buy some nice fabrics so you, or your loved one, can make some headbands.  Nothing says “I care” like a personal gift that you’ve made for someone.  Something as simple as colorful fabric and an elastic band can be made into something beautiful, and something that will be cherished by whomever you gift it to.
